Habitat Hamilton Hands Over Keys to the Waterdown Townhomes

(August 21, 2019—Hamilton, ON) – This Friday marks the completion of another successful home build for Habitat for Humanity Hamilton. Three Habitat homeowner families will officially receive their keys, and their mortgages, to their new homes this Friday. The perfect way to kick off a new school year!

The townhome is Habitat Hamilton’s first build in the Flamborough region, located in a beautiful neighbourhood, conveniently located close to the public library, grocery stores, pharmacies and parks.

Home title sponsor, Mikmada Homes, has been an incredible supporter of Habitat Hamilton during this home build. Mikmada provided site supervision as well as access and support from its industry partners. Beyond the significant support from Mikmada Homes, Habitat Hamilton also secured a very large donation from the REALTORS Association of Hamilton-Burlington, whose members fundraised over $77,000 for the build. Other major donors ($10,000+) for the Waterdown Townhome Build include Excel Heating and Air Conditioning, Genworth Canada, CGC Inc., Dulux Paints, Quality Sterling Group, and the Rotary Club of Waterdown.

“I’m very delighted that our Waterdown Townhome Build is now complete and that we’ll be able to watch three families’ lives change, for the better, upon receiving the keys to their new homes,” says Sean Ferris, Habitat Hamilton’s Executive Director. “We owe much thanks to our community of volunteers and supporters, for helping us build strength, stability and self-reliance through homeownership, here in the Flamborough region.”

Habitat Hamilton’s three homeowner families were selected based on each family’s level of need, their willingness to partner and their ability to pay an interest-free and geared-to-income mortgage. Our new homeowner families have also completed 500 hours of volunteer support with Habitat Hamilton.

Irene, Francis and their two children are one of three homeowner families designated to move into the Waterdown townhomes. The family currently lives in a local apartment building, but their space is overcrowded, making it an unsuitable fit for the family. Already Waterdown residents, Irene and Francis are happy that their children will be able to attend the same school, especially their eldest son, whose school accommodates his special needs. Remaining in his school’s catchment area means he will be able to continue to receive an education at his current school, which is a great reassurance to his parents. This family of four can’t wait to move into their new home, start a vegetable garden, and have enough space for the kids to have their own rooms.

Mike and Anita, are the grandparents and guardians of three children, all of whom are very happy to become new Waterdown residents and homeowners. The couple are the embodiment of selflessness, currently sleeping in the living room of their rented apartment so their grandkids can have the bedrooms. Mike and Anita are looking forward to becoming homeowners, which they say has been a lifelong dream. The opportunity to be Habitat Hamilton homeowners solidifies their belief that if you work hard enough, opportunities will come your way.

“We’re very excited to hand over the keys this Friday to three Habitat homeowners, capping off our inaugural build in Waterdown,” says Habitat Hamilton Board Chair, Tom Vert. “I have been fortunate enough to take part in many home sale celebrations throughout my three years on the board, but I never get used to the heart warming and fulfilling feeling of knowing a family’s life will be forever changed. Seeing the faces of young people light up when they see their new homes, while knowing the parents or guardians will be able to afford their mortgage, is priceless.”

This week’s Home Sale Celebration will take place on Friday, August 23rd, at 10:00am, at 10 Dennis Avenue, Waterdown. Media are welcome to attend, with photo and interview opportunities available.
