Media Release: Six Nations of the Grand River Celebrate the Completion of Five Affordable Homes in Partnership with Habitat for Humanity

Oshweken, ON (October 15th, 2024)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OHSWEKEN, ON – Six Nations of the Grand River, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Hamilton and Habitat for Humanity Heartland, is proud to announce the completion of Onondaga 2, a five-unit townhome build dedicated to providing affordable rental homes for local Six Nations families.

This milestone marks the completion of the second phase of the Onondaga builds, bringing the total number of new affordable homes delivered through this partnership to ten. Onondaga 2 follows the same innovative design as its predecessor, delivering safe and affordable housing to families in need, thanks to funding received from the Six Nations of the Grand River Economic Development Trust.  The build also received funding from Habitat for Humanity Canada through the support of various corporate partners.

We are thrilled to celebrate the completion of these homes. Habitat for Humanity is deeply committed to addressing the housing crisis, and this partnership with Six Nations has been a positive step in the right direction,” said Sean Ferris, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Hamilton. “We know that providing safe, secure, and affordable housing can be truly life-changing, and so we’re very proud to be part of this effort to increase the affordable housing supply of the Six Nations community.”

At a private event, key stakeholders, community members, and corporate partners toured the completed Onondaga 2 homes. Guests then gathered at a nearby event hall to commemorate this achievement with speeches, refreshments, and an opportunity to reflect on the impact of affordable housing on local families.

“The townhouses also symbolize how Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups can work together to tackle the lack of affordable housing in First Nations communities”, said Dale Sault, property manager with Six Nations Housing. “It’s been amazing,” Sault said of her department’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity Hamilton and Habitat Heartland Ontario.

The need for affordable housing on the Six Nations of the Grand River is more critical than ever. The Onondaga builds are just one of many initiatives aimed at addressing this demand, providing families with the opportunity to live in safe, sustainable, and affordable homes.

While we celebrate the completion of Onondaga 2, Habitat for Humanity Hamilton and Habitat for Humanity Heartland remain committed to supporting more home builds within Indigenous communities.
