(Monday, November 22, 2021 – Hamilton, ON) Habitat for Humanity Hamilton is happy to announce that two new home partners will be moving into their semi-detached homes, just in time for the holidays.
Habitat Hamilton will hand over the keys during its Home Sale Celebration on Wednesday, November 24th at 9:30am at 134 Catharine Street North, in the heart of Hamilton.
It’s been dubbed the Legacy Build thanks to Habitat Hamilton’s title supporter, the Hamilton-Halton Construction Association (HHCA). HHCA’s commitment to raise $200,000 is the association’s way of giving back to celebrate its centennial, this past year.
With a land donation secured by the Diocese of Hamilton, Habitat Hamilton was eager to get started on this build, back in late 2019. But just as Habitat Hamilton secured its build permits, and was ready to break ground, the global pandemic was declared. Despite several hurdles, build progress continued and Habitat Hamilton was able to complete both homes, just in time for the holiday season.
“There’s something kind of magical about handing over the keys, to two new Habitat home partners, so close to the holidays,” says Sean Ferris, Executive Director at Habitat Hamilton. “Despite the challenges we faced during covid-19, we were still able to complete this build thanks to our incredible volunteers, partners and supporters.”
The Legacy Build is located in Hamilton’s downtown core, in close proximity to public transit and convenient amenities. Both homes have been built to suit the needs of each home partner family, with enough space for children to have their own bedrooms, as well as backyards for room to play outdoors. The homes have also been outfitted with an array of sustainability features, using 35 percent less energy than a typical new build, while emitting about 25 percent less greenhouse gas. They’re also built to an accessibility-ready standard, allowing for accessible-friendly features to be installed, if required in the future, without the need to undergo major renovations to the home.
“Here at Hamilton-Halton Construction Association, we’ve looked forward to this day for quite some time,” admits Sue Ramsay, General Manager of HHCA and Vice-Chair of Habitat Hamilton’s Board of Directors. “I can’t think of a better way to honour our association’s centennial, which took place last year, than to commemorate the milestone by giving back to our local community. Many thanks to our association members who generously donated their time, material, and money to make these two homes a reality. None of this would have been possible without your incredible kindness.”
Significant donors ($10,000+) for the Legacy Build include: Alectra Cares (Alectra Utilities), ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Canadian Piping Trades LOCAL 67, Charles Linsey and Associates Ltd., Cogeco Connexion, Diocese of Hamilton, DuPont, Enviroshake, Grant Somerville Design, Hamilton-Halton Construction Association, Hanson Ready Mix, IBI Group, Joseph Haulage, Lancaster Group, Lowe’s Canada, Sagen, Marini & Sons Construction Ltd., Miranda Construction, Robb’s Roofing, and Royal Bank of Canada.
“If there’s one thing we can all agree on from the last two years, it’s the importance of home,” says Cherie Somerville, Chair of Habitat Hamilton’s Board of Directors. “On behalf of everyone here at Habitat for Humanity Hamilton, we wish our new Habitat home partners nothing but happiness, stability and self-reliance. Welcome home and happy holidays.”
