Habitat Hamilton launches its Legacy Build in partnership with the Hamilton-Halton Construction Association

(Friday, June 26, 2020—Hamilton , ON) – Habitat for Humanity Hamilton is excited to announce the commencement of its newest build, a semi-detached two-unit home located at 134 Catharine Street North, in downtown Hamilton.

With soil remediation complete and foundations poured, Habitat Hamilton is happy to announce the official launch of its newest home build in partnership with the Hamilton-Halton Construction Association (HHCA). The HHCA celebrates its centennial this year and is commemorating the milestone by fundraising in support of the semi-detached homes, fittingly named the Legacy Build. To date, HHCA and its members have raised just over $150,000, all in support of helping Habitat Hamilton build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.

“The Hamilton-Halton Construction Association is one of Habitat Hamilton’s largest and longest-standing donors and we’re so excited that we’ve partnered with them on this home build, helping support two local homeowner families,” says Sean Ferris, Executive Director of Habitat Hamilton. “Though we typically celebrate with an in-person get-together at the build site, to launch each new home build, we’re grateful we can utilize technology and our social media platforms to stay connected and commemorate this moment in a safe and meaningful way.”

“The HHCA is thrilled to celebrate its centennial by partnering with Habitat Hamilton to build a semi-detached home for two local families. We are humbled and honoured to give back to our community, a community we’ve been a proud member of for the past 100 years. The Legacy Build is testament to the power and tenacity of a network of members and supporters, who are making our streets safer, happier and stronger” says Sue Ramsay, General Manager of the HHCA and Vice Chair of Habitat Hamilton. “I couldn’t be prouder of the Legacy Build donors who have stepped up to support with this important initiative.”

Beyond the significant support from the HHCA, Habitat Hamilton also secured other major donations and pledges ($10,000+) for The Legacy Build from The Diocese of Hamilton, Cogeco Connexion, Genworth Canada, Grant Somerville Design, Hanson Ready Mix, Historia Building Restoration Inc., Lancaster Group Inc., LJ Barton Mechanical Inc., Marini and Sons Construction Ltd., and Miranda Construction.

Two future Habitat homeowner families have been selected for both semis and are looking forward to the completion of their new homes.

A single mother of three from Hamilton has been accepted as a Legacy Build Habitat homeowner with her children. Currently living in subsidized housing, she worries about the safety of her neighbourhood and the well-being of her children. She’s very grateful for the opportunity to become a first-time homeowner and to raise her children in a safe and decent home.

The Bennet family is comprised of two parents and two children who are anticipating the day they get to move into their new home. Currently, they reside in an overcrowded unit that is in need of repair. The children are looking forward to having their own bedrooms and a space to play outside in the backyard.

Habitat Hamilton is hosting a virtual foundation celebration for the Legacy Build on Tuesday, June 30th across its social media platforms (@habitathamilton). Due to current gathering restrictions and as a precaution to keep supporters and stakeholders safe, Habitat Hamilton will host a virtual foundation celebration for the official launch of its Legacy Build. On Tuesday, June 30th, Habitat Hamilton will celebrate with videos, stories, posts and photos throughout the day, across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Habitat Hamilton is able to build homes thanks to generous supporters who donate monetary gifts, building materials and skilled labour. To learn more about how you can help the Legacy Build, please visit our website at www.ebmediatestsite.ca/test8/donate.
