FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Friday, December 15th, Habitat for Humanity Hamilton will host its Home Sale Celebration for three recently completed single-family homes in the Hamilton Beach Community. At the celebration, Habitat Hamilton will hand over the keys to three local families.
With a geared-to-income and interest-free mortgage, the new homeowners will gain the strength, stability and self-reliance they need in order to break themselves and their families free from poverty.
“This has been a long time coming. We’re so thrilled that these homes will accommodate three families who are in need of safe, decent, and affordable housing. And what better time to complete them than during the holiday season?” says Sean Ferris, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Hamilton.
With a mission to mobilize volunteers and community partners, Habitat Hamilton has trusted on the support of volunteers, supporters and corporate donors to help complete construction before the holidays.
“There are just too many supporters to name them all, but the City of Hamilton and companies such as ArcelorMittal Dofasco and The Home Depot Canada Foundation have been pivotal supporters, donating tens of thousands of dollars—alongside countless volunteer hours—enabling us to improve the communities in which we all work and live in,” states Ferris.
“The completion of these homes wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless support of our crew leaders, volunteers and donors. There’s an African proverb that states ‘it takes a village to raise a child,’ but I also believe that ‘it takes a village to build a strong community.’ We’ll bear witness to it this Friday as we hand the keys over to three hard-working families” says John Ariens, Board Chair of Habitat for Humanity Hamilton.
The Crowe family is one of the three families due to receive keys to their new home this Friday. They’re a large family of 6, comprised of 2 parents and 4 children (3 boys and 1 girl, ranging in ages 3 through 15 years old). Though both parents work (the father is a Construction Worker and the mother is a Sales Associate), it’s been difficult for them to find suitable housing for their family.
“Water damage is a constant struggle for us. When it rains, our walls get soggy. Our landlords have come by a couple of times to do patch-up work, but the cracks in the walls always return. One of the ceilings caved in in our neighbour’s unit and we’re afraid the same could happen to us. I’m also concerned about the mold that lives inside the walls and how it’s effecting my family’s health,” says Pauline Crowe, mother of the Crowe family and future Habitat homeowner.
Pauline states, “We wouldn’t be able to become homeowners without Habitat.”
Fortunately, the Crowe family will no longer have to fear water damage or their health in their new Habitat home.
