Attention Parents – How Your Child Can Support Affordable Housing In Hamilton!

HAMILTON, ON (Dec 4th, 2023) We sometimes receive requests from youth who want to support our mission.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept volunteers on our build sites until they are 18 years of age, and most kids are not yet able to make a donation.  However, through the Meaning of Home Contest, your child can directly support our work to build strength, stability, and self-reliance in our community through shelter.

A home is a place where we create the stories, loving memories, and foundations of our lives. But for some families, the dream of having a stable and secure home remains a challenge. That’s what the Meaning of Home contest aims to change!

What is the Meaning of Home Contest?

The Meaning of Home contest is not just a writing competition; it’s an avenue for your child to express their thoughts, feelings, and unique perspectives on the concept of home.  In doing so, they will be directly helping to support our affordable housing initiatives. Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 are invited to submit a 50–300-word composition, essay, or poem that delves into what home means to them.

How Does It Work

For every submission, a $10 donation is made to Habitat for Humanity Hamilton, thanks to our generous contest sponsor, Sagen.

Apart from the personal growth and pride your child will experience from participating, the Meaning of Home contest also offers some fantastic incentives.

The winner from each grade will receive an iPad, their entire class will get to celebrate with a pizza party, and they will receive a $30,000 grant for their local Habitat for Humanity.

Three runners-up from each grade will get to take home a tablet, enjoy a class pizza party, and receive a $10,000 grant for their local Habitat affiliate. It’s a win-win for all participants!

The Impact of Your Child’s Words

Your child’s entry will be more than just a piece of writing; it will be a powerful message that helps Habitat for Humanity Hamilton make a real difference. The contest encourages children to understand the value of home, and it fosters empathy for those who might not have a safe and stable place to call their own.

By participating in this contest, your child can become a part of a larger mission – one that’s dedicated to improving the lives of others.

How You Can Support Your Child

As a parent, you would play an important role in guiding your child through the creative process. You can help them brainstorm ideas, provide feedback, and encourage them to express their feelings about home and what it means to them. The Meaning of Home contest is an opportunity for parents and children to bond over shared values of compassion and creativity.

Let Your Child’s Words Build Homes

The Meaning of Home contest is more than just a writing competition; it’s a chance for your child to make a tangible impact on the lives of underhoused families. By participating, they will not only enhance their writing skills and creativity, but also learn the value of community involvement and empathy.

Please join us in celebrating the power of words and the significance of home. Encourage your child to participate in the Meaning of Home contest and let their words assist us to build more affordable homes.

Every entry counts! Let’s make Hamilton a better place, one heartfelt entry at a time.
