HAMILTON, ON (Dec 14, 2023) As with most charities, our volunteers collectively play an essential role in the advancement of our cause. Our volunteers come in different forms, with varying backgrounds and skills, and work with us for different lengths of time. Some volunteer with us for one day. Some, for a few weeks or months, and some generously give of their time for years. Then, there are exceptional individuals like Walt Bayliss, who show an incredible level of dedication and drive, and volunteer steadily with us for decades. For an incredible 31 years, since almost the very beginning of Habitat Hamilton, he has been an integral part of the organization, tirelessly contributing to the organization’s mission.
Walt’s journey with Habitat began in a rather unique way. Habitat Hamilton began its work in 1991, and word began spreading throughout the community. Walt was drawn to the organization because Habitat was in the business of building affordable housing, and he just so happened to be starting a side business creating renderings of home designs at that time. This serendipitous connection led him to where he is today, showcasing the perfect alignment between Walt’s skills and Habitat Hamilton’s mission.
Walt’s skillset has played an important role in Habitat Hamilton’s developments and continued growth ever since. Walt has just about done it all for Habitat Hamilton, both onsite and offsite. He has had a genuine willingness to assist wherever needed since day one. From assisting on home designs, to being a crew lead on volunteer build days, to organizing book sales, golf tournaments, and other innovative fundraising endeavors, he has played a pivotal role in spreading awareness about Habitat and securing donations. Perhaps most importantly, Walt served as Chairperson of the Board of Directors during an important period in the early days of Habitat Hamilton.
His involvement with Habitat has left an enduring impact on Walt’s life. “I’ve met a lot of good people; some are still friends,” he acknowledges. It also helped Walt professionally, as it served as valuable talking point and helped introduce him to many local contractors.
When asked if he has any advice for people considering volunteering with Habitat Hamilton, Walt’s advice is straightforward and encouraging, “There’s so many things you can do at Habitat. Really, just get out and get started; nobody will be staring at you—they will be too busy concentrating on not hitting their fingers with their own hammer.”
Walt’s passion for this volunteer work is rooted in the fact that his efforts always lead to genuine change and a positive impact in the community. He emphasizes how the organization provides housing for those who wouldn’t typically afford it, conducts public build days for skill development, operates the ReStore for discounted goods, and offers repair programs to help people stay in their homes.
Reflecting on his journey, Walt recalls a challenging moment that led to one of his greatest achievements as a volunteer. At a time when Habitat Hamilton urgently needed more funding, Walt, while serving as Chair, facilitated the opening of the first Hamilton ReStore. This was a large undertaking, and despite some initial internal resistance, Walt’s persistence prevailed. The Restore became a vital source of support for years to come and is still an essential part of Habitat Hamilton’s work today. Habitat Hamilton is now close to opening its second ReStore, and possibly more in the future.
In his 31 years of selfless service, Walt has not only contributed significantly to Habitat for Humanity Hamilton but has also become an emblem of dedication and passion for the cause. His story exemplifies the transformative power of long-term volunteering, where one individual’s commitment can make a profound difference in the lives of many. We thank Walt for his 31 years (and counting) of unwavering dedication and inspiration. Your legacy will continue to motivate and uplift others in the years to come.
