Giving Tuesday History
In 2012, the Giving Tuesday movement was created by a group of philanthropic visionaries based out of New York City to help counteract the excessive consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. They figured, if storefront businesses can have a day each year that is all about them, and then online businesses can have their big day shortly after, why can’t charities and not-for-profits have a similar day as well? Many would agree that a dedicated push each year to support charitable works is more important than boosting the profits of major corporations. Giving Tuesday promotes and celebrates generosity, community support, and the spirit of giving through the power of social media. The goal of the movement is to encourage people to give back instead of buying things they don’t need, with a mission to create a world where giving back is a part of everyday life.
Giving Tuesday has become extremely popular since its creation. With over 80 countries actively participating, it is now the world’s largest generosity movement. Canada embraced Giving Tuesday in 2013 and has since seen a major influx of donations to many non-profits in support of the movement. In 2021, Canada raised $43.6 million in online donations and had forty-seven local community movements across the nation.
