Habitat for Humanity Hamilton Partners with Mikmada Homes to Build a Three-Unit Townhome for Families in Need

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Waterdown Habitat Build; Habitat build in Waterdown

Habitat for Humanity Hamilton and Mikmada Homes have launched a partnership with plans to build a three-unit townhome for local families in need, situated in the heart of Waterdown.

The proposed build site is located on the south-west corner of Highway 5 and Dennis Avenue, just a couple of blocks from the recently completed public library. This week, Hamilton’s City Council’s planning committee approved a motion to rezone Habitat for Humanity Hamilton’s property into a residential 3-unit townhome.

Habitat Hamilton is in the midst of selecting three hard-working families who will gain homeownership of the units upon their completion. Working under the mantra of providing “a hand up, not a handout,” selected families will receive an interest-free and geared-to-income mortgage. Partner families will also need to contribute 500 hours of volunteer time in lieu of a traditional down payment.

“It’s our belief that everyone deserves a place to call home, but the unfortunate truth is that 1.6 million families in Canada are in need of safe, decent and affordable shelter. We’re hoping Habitat for Humanity Hamilton’s efforts will help mitigate the affordable housing crisis here in our local communities,” says John Ariens, Board Chair of Habitat for Humanity Hamilton.

Though founded in 1991, this will be Habitat for Humanity Hamilton’s inaugural build in the Flamborough region.

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Mikmada Homes to complete our very first Waterdown build. We’re hopeful that this build will unite the Flamborough region in support of three local families in need of affordable housing. We’re so humbled and proud of the response we’ve received from the community thus far and we can’t wait to build on this momentum moving forward,” says Sean Ferris, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Hamilton.

“It feels good to be able to give back to the Waterdown community through contributing to such a worthy cause and organization. Mikmada Homes is happy to donate the time and resources necessary to construct these homes for three local families,” says Adam Nesbitt, President of Mikmada Homes.

Habitat for Humanity Hamilton and Mikmada Homes are currently seeking skilled-trades pro-bono volunteer support as well as donated materials and monetary contributions from local businesses and community members.
