Habitat For Humanity Hamilton Tolton Avenue Photo Gallery
Habitat Hamilton completed our first wheelchair accessible home in East Hamilton in May 2009. Our Habitat family of three teenagers and their Dad eagerly awaited the chance to move into their new home with a wheel chair ramp, a fully accessible kitchen and bathrooms and wide doorways.
We had great support from a wide variety of volunteers. It started with a group from Canadian navy's HMCS Charlottetown that started the salvage of the old building on the site. Maple hardwood floor, a claw foot tub and some relatively new doors and windows were reclaimed to be sold at our Restore and kept out of the landfill.
Volunteers from Dillon consulting and Students from the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship program took over to begin framing and sheathing the walls, putting on the roof and building the inside rooms. Volunteers from area Home Depots' hung and finished the drywall.
Other Habitat volunteers put the finishing touches on the building including laying the laminate floor, painting, finishing the bathroom tiles and building the wheel chair ramp.
Sod and landscaping happened soon after, and the family was able to enjoy the summer in their new neighborhood! Overall it was a great team effort -
