Building homes, Building hope
Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976. Our goal is the elimination of poverty housing and homelessness throughout the world, making the provision of a decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity invites volunteers to work together in partnership with families in need - providing "a hand up -- not a hand out".
Habitat for Humanity Hamilton (HFHH) is an independent, not-for-profit Christian housing program dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing, by building homes in partnership with families in need. Homeowners contribute hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” to the construction of their own homes and then repay a long-term, no-interest mortgage. Mortgage costs are kept low by the use of volunteer labour and the generous donations of funds and building materials.
The next several years promise to be exciting ones for our organization, here in Hamilton. We are a vibrant community located in an outstanding natural environment, known for its diverse businesses, healthcare and education. However, poverty is one of Hamilton’s biggest challenges with 20% of its citizens living at or below the poverty line. HFHH wants to join and work together at reducing the number of families living in poverty in our community.
Internationally, Habitat has built more than 600,000 homes in 80 countries around the world. In the next 5 years, it is Habitat’s goal to be building 1800 homes across Canada.
